BEAUTIFUL MOLE-MEN ADVENTURES     by Russ Woods

There was a mole-man named Sandy who gave birth to six children. She held them all to her at once. One of the children was born with a thick, furry tail. Sandy named her after her father, Cloud-bear. The other children were named Alfred, Songstress, Carly, Gramophone, & Bug-mover. Bug-mover had big dreams of leaving the salt forest. Her sisters were perfectly content to draw elaborate murals of pie-eating contests & shallow, trout-filled streams all along the tunnel walls, but Bug-mover wanted to find oceans & interstates, & eat new foods from gleaming white plates. She packed a bag & drew a map she saw in a dream. She kissed her mother & sisters on their cheeks & stroked Cloud-bear's silky tail. I am off, she told them. Take care, they told her. She spent the first night in a field filled with rocks that looked like teeth. The rocks grew cold in the moonlight. She walked all day & then spent the second night under an overturned wheelbarrow in an abandoned home depot. The dark there gave her comfort & reminded her of home. She hugged a hammer with an orange rubber grip that reminded her of a carrot. I am off, Bug-mover whispered to the carrot-hammer as she was going to sleep. She blew out the candle they had been huddled near. Take care, said the hammer.
